DESCRIPTION OF HISTORIC PLACE
The Adam Clendenen House is a one-and-a-half-storey, red brick, residential structure built circa 1840 on a fieldstone foundation. Its gable roof, three-bay façade, central doorway and symmetrical elevations are typical of the Georgian style favoured at that time for pre-Confederation farmhouses.
The building has been designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act by the Town of Markham via By-law 2001-172.
HERITAGE VALUE
This farmhouse is associated with the Clendenen family, one of Markham’s most prominent early settlers. It is situated on a portion of the original 200 acre lot granted by the Crown to John Clendenen. Originally from Ireland, the family first immigrated to the United States, moving next to Thorold in the Niagara Region and finally settling in Markham Township in 1803.
Upon John Clendenen’s death in 1815, the 200 acres were divided amongst the family with the eastern 50 acres of Lot 17 eventually being owned by Adam Clendenen, John’s grandson. Sometime around 1840, Adam constructed the house on the northern half of Lot 17, Concession 8. The Clendenen family burial plot is located nearby, at the approximate centre of the 200 acres that comprised Lot 17; five gravestones remain, marking the final resting place of the early Clendenens.
Architecturally, the Adam Clendenen House is an excellent example of a Georgian-style farmhouse of the 1840s. This one-and-a-half storey, red brick building has a relatively spacious interior despite its small external appearance. The brick is laid in a common bond pattern with an angled design over the door and windows. The building rests on its original fieldstone foundation.
The front façade contains three bays: a central entryway flanked on either side by small two-over-two windows. A transom is situated above the main door while the uniformly-styled fenestration features substantial lug-sills on the bottom portion of the frames. The interior of the house features substantial wood baseboards, window and door trims and floors – all original to the house and in excellent condition.
- association with the Clendenen family
- in-situ location, on a portion of the original 200-acre land grant
- proximity to the Clendenen family burial plot
- one-and-a-half-storey Georgian design, with side gable and centrally positioned main entrance
- red brick construction with fieldstone foundation
- three bays on front façade
- uniform fenestration of 2-over-2 windows

John and Magdalene Clendenen and their children were among the earliest settlers of Markham Township. Believed to be of Irish origin, the family settled here from New Jersey. The Clendenen family arrived in Upper Canada in 1797, initially living at 12 Mile Creek (St. Catherine’s) on the Niagara Frontier. John Clendenen Sr. petitioned for a land grant, and was assigned Lot 17, Concession 8, Markham Township in 1801. After clearing 18 acres and building a hewn log house, he received the Crown patent in 1803. Following John Clendenen’s death in 1815, the property was divided among his descendants.

The Adam Clendenen House at 8 Green Hollow Court (previously known as 9516 Ninth Line and as 9642 9th Line) is a 1½ story, red brick, farm house, built in the Georgian Style about 1840. The Family Burial Plot is located near the centre of Lot 17, Concession 8. Five grave-markers still mark the final resting place of the early Clendenen’s. The Clendenen family farmed this land until 1950. The early brick farmhouse built by Adam Clendenen (1809-1894), John and Magdalene Clendenen’s grandson, still stands today at 8 Green Hollow Court. In 2007, the House was completely restored and incorporated into the construction of the All Smiles Childcare Centre, designed to serve the children of Markham.

Although the lands around the House and the Centre are developing quickly, the Adam Clendenen House will serve as an important reminder of the historic agricultural tradition of Markham for years to come.

The Town of Markham has designated Adam Clendenen’s House under the Ontario Heritage Act.

This is one of those posts that just has to be shared with everyone, at this time of year.
He is not a member of my family tree, but just the same , he is a Moore of some esteemed character. There are stories out there stating that Clement Moore had indeed “borrowed” the poem from Henry Livingston, another fine poet in his time. But the whole idea of fighting over something that was meant to bring children and families alike together for the holiday season, well in my mind thats just wrong. Below is the Poem said to be written by Henry Livingston, & published by C.C.Moore, 15 years later in a New York paper. It has been a staple in our household by one means of media or another(radio, television, book form) Please enjoy the holiday season, and enjoy friends and family that much more,”Merry Christmas to ALL.”

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

“Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Always wear a red poppy as a symbol of remembrance for those who served in the war.

On the Eleventh Hour, of the Eleventh Day, in the Eleventh Month, countries and nations alike, will stand together as one, and remember the sacrifices that family, friends, and loved ones gave so that we could live life free of oppression, and to stand proud on this land that our ancestors& family members fought valiantly to protect, and succeeded in doing so.

Two Minutes of silence is all they ask, for the respect they deserve , Its one day a year that commemorates those who gave their lives, and those who returned from god knows what hellish sights they endured for those many months ,some came back broken , but not beaten, others came back in shock, and to the day they passed on, kept reliving those nightmares in their dreams. Two minutes to remember a lifetime ago, a generation gone, and to remember the ones , even now, in this the 21st century, put their lives on the line for the country they call home, Canada, and the freedom that awaits them when they come home, someday soon.
Arthur John Moore , on the left,
Served 4yrs in the Second World War, 3yrs in the Korean war and came home safe.Married and started a family.

Herbert Wilburt Frizzell : A Merchant Marine, served 3-4 months on board a ship during 2nd WW. came home safe, married and fathered 5 children with his wife, and lived for another sixty plus years.

Its men like these that put their lives on the line every day, no matter what the cost, most of them came home, some didn’t. Don’t let them be forgotten, wear a poppy, and remember, it’s only two minutes out of a lifetime, think of were we’d be if they hadn’t fought .
Lest We Forget….
They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

This is one of those times that as a researcher , I managed to finally meet another long lost cousin. I originally started doing this kind of research to find my Fathers family “Moore” side of my tree. But as I’ve said in previous postings , nary a member of dads tree, or family has been very forthcoming (when found) with any help, even when contacted. As with finding members of the Clendenning side of the family, (Moms side), they seem to just virtually fall off of the proverbial Family tree , after a lot of shaking, but they are there. In May of this year’2010′ I went to visit my moms first cousin who’d I had never met before, and only recently heard about. Her name is Beatrice Brennan(maiden name YEO) It was only recently that she had lost her husband Louis, who passed away in February.I had to wait patiently for the meeting to take place, when she was ready, she’d let me know. I had a couple of conversations with her on the phone though, she seemed like a wonderful person, and I couldn’t wait to meet her.

In Above picture L to R (Norman and Susie Clendenning,Then Jessie ‘Norm’s sister’ and Clifford Yeo,then up front left is little Beatrice , beside her is my mom Norma, then behind her is Cliff Jr.) This picture I will always treasure, I have very little to no picture of my mom as a little girl.
When my wife and I finally managed to get to go meet my 2nd cousin,we picked an early spring day, it was a little cloudy that Sunday, but to me, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. As well as meeting Bea, I also met her Daughter Jane(another cousin)and her son.

In above picture L to R (Joseph Moore”Clendenning descendent”, wife Deborah, Then Cousin Jane, then her mom, Beatrice Yeo,Brennan.( Another Clendenning Descendent)
If this has taught me anything it is that “Family is everything” and that “All Family is Special,Even Ones We Just Found”

The mention of the word or phrase” Family Tree” to some relatives sends them scurrying to the door, or the darkest recessed areas of the basement or the attic. But for others, as I have learned, it’s like an open invitation to learn of new stories, or facts concerning their past family members, ones they may have only heard rumored tales about the exploits they encountered. Or it may be about a half-sister who was only mentioned in hushed whispers, or flippantly in passing , only to never be mentioned again. It’s these stories that I try to trace and track down, “a factual trek down memory lane” as it were. A family tree is more than just numbers and dates stuffed into a binder on yellowing pages that will probably be tossed to the curbside long after they have been collected, and I am dust in the ground. It is history that has happened before our time, but it is history that our “ancestors lived”, and experienced, and it brings me to ponder that after being contacted by a ” Mr. David Moore” who asked the question….. “Who is this CECIL MOORE?” Meaning my grandfather. His grandfathers name was also Cecil Moore, and he goes on to elaborate that his grandfather “Cecil” was married in the small village of Millbrook , well that just got my curiosity shovel going , so I had to do some serious digging. I knew that I had come across a Wilbur Moore in my travels that got married in Millbrook, but no Cecil.

Marriage Cert. for Edna McCorry & Wilbur C.Moore March 27,1917

Wilbur C Moore, the “C” stands for Cecil, go figure….I track down the records that I had one time dismissed as not required for my family research, MAN… was I ever mistaken about that one too. It would seem that Edna’s full name at birth is “Elizabeth Edna McCorry” McCorry is the maiden name of my maternal Grandmother( my Mom’s…MOM ) Susan McCorry, daughter of George and Susan McCorry(it says Helen on the certificate*) further research shows its was a mistake on their part. So to answer Dave Moore’s question….Who is this Cecil Moore? Well, I can tell you this, Your Cecil Moore is the guy who married my great Aunt Edna McCorry, according to Dave though, his grandfather remarried at a later date, and it is THAT woman who is his grandmother. The thing that I learned from this is, no information is insignificant to your family research, no matter how small it is, or how trivial you may think it is. Thanks Dave :It Really is a small world out there.

When I started this hobby of genealogy, in 2002 I never imagined that I would be able to trace as far back as the 1850′s England, not to mention at the speed I did when I did. As mentioned in the past, I started looking for immediate family members only “surnamed Moore” only. This was because I had NO idea who my ancestors were, or WHERE they had originated from, We were always told that dad was Irish, he had said he was Irish, Boy was he misinformed about that. After finding that dad was born in Peterborough Canada, the records showed that his father had worked at the C.G.E. building as a tool and die man, then promoted to supervisor of the department. But the man that was really interested in was Cecil’s father, my dads grandfather William Frederick Moore, my Great-grandfather.

I guess it would have to start at the beginning so to speak, with the marriage of John Jame Moore to Mary Anne Squire in ColdBath Square on the date of November 14,1847.

Copy of their marriage ‘banns’ that was performed at St.Marks in Clerkenwell

This is the first part of a story, about a man who lived a long and eventful life, through interesting and desperate times. He was born before Canada was a country, and he passed away just a little over 3 months before Canada’s Centennial Celebrations were to take place in July of 1967.

The thing is, we as people, don’t realize the impact ,let alone the length of time we have here on planet Earth. We could be here for a short visit, after birth, six days, or six months, Or we could end up as a college graduate attending a university of our choice, be it here in Canada or in a foreign country learning all about life from a different perspective, like the hard ships of every day life. Or much like my own father, lived until his body could endure no more at the ripe age of Eighty years, his mind was still alert, but it was his frail body that betrayed him in the end.

Elias Gillard was such a man and more.Born to Henry and Maryanne Gillard of Newfoundland, on November 24,1864. Now think of that date in time or even that year in Canada, 1864.

(In 1864, delegates from Newfoundland attended a Quebec conference and signed the resolutions that became the foundations of the 1867 British North America Act).

To even think about this is to boggle ones mind. He was( as far as I have found, an only child) no others have come forward to dispute my findings”yet” I am sure there are researchers out there somewhere to say otherwise, if so please let me know.

The link below will lead to the Latter day saints family searches around the world.

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=/eng/search/ancestorsearchresults.asp

And below is a link to a copy Elias Gillard and his parents Henry and Mary-Ann when the census was taken in 1880 Englee Newfoundland. This was found at the above link.

IGI Individual Record gillard family 1880 census

Just recently I found a newspaper site on the internet which names both Elias his wife Emily, and his son in the clipping. Something about a fight, in which they both had to appear in court. Emily however did not appear, and the case was dismissed.( the link is below)

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=35&dat=18971118&id=-mQxAAAAIBAJ&sjid=GTsDAAAAIBAJ&pg=4215,6952017

“Meting Out Justice” is the title for the written piece in the Evening Telegram for Nov.18,1897. This is just one of the fine pieces of the past that is out there to dig up. So at this time Elias was 33 years old, and married to Emily, and his son Fletcher. Now this is very interesting because in my research I have never come across a “Fletcher Gillard”. this is once again a fruitful find that we can move forward with, looking for any link to this man, his father, Elias Gillard.

Upon landing in Canada, I bet that all new Canadians had this fear of “Where will we live?” Well from I have managed to ascertain from looking into the past lives of my MOORE side of the family tree, is that the family landed in Quebec City. William and his eldest son,Claude, came over from England in1910. In the spring of 1911 Williams wife,Elizabeth with three of her other children came to Canada, So there was William and Claude, Elizabeth, her two daughters, Annie and Beatrice, then Cecil, the youngest of them all. Now being a newly landed immigrant from England must have been very scary,”Stranger in a Strange Land” feeling. What next? But for the Moore family, coming to a new beginning may have been scary, but William managed to obtain a place to live in his newly adoptive country after a few months in Peterborough. Working with his son Claude , they both manage to acquire a farm house (how it looks now) at 132 Sophia Street, in Peterborough Ontario.

<img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-310" title="1911 census William Moore and Family 132 Sophia street.
As you can see the names of the MOORE family members, Husband, wife, children, their respected names, place of residence,(132 Sophia street) the years they were born, the ages they each were at the time of the census, what their country of origin is and finally what year they came to Canada.

It’s funny , how when there are people alive that you ask certain questions and they don’t know for sure, or they just flub the answer. Then after they are gone you find information about the past that they surely could help with, but alas, they too have joined their ancestors in the world of ghostly pasts. Herbert Frizzell was such a man, he may have been able to help with his heritage, and he did a little with his birth certificate. as seen below.

Herbert Frizzell birth Certificate 1921

On his existing certificate was his mothers name, fathers name, place of birth, and his fathers occupation. Al very useful things to track down Otto Frizzell. Otto came into Canada as a baby born in 1897 in and returned to Portsmouth N.H. in 1902 ( as seen below on the S.S. Yarmouth ships manifest) His name is on the 13th line of said manifest.

With Otto and his family returning to the States I’d thought that this was going to be a rather extensive search, and I was right. This search actually took me about six months of looking to find what little information that I did come across. After finding this ships manifest I Googled Otto Frizzell and came up with his military Attestation papers for the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

This is page 1 of 2

This is page 2 of 2

With these papers I managed to derive his exact date of birth(Sept.24,1897),his place of birth (Portsmouth U.S.A.) his wife’s name being Margeret Martha Frizzell, And his place of residence at the time of signing his papers for the C.E.F. With this in hand, I proceeded to continue to look for an find any information regarding Otto Leander FRIZZELL. It was only a matter of time before something of interest was found .

Then I came across this link from the Shelburne County and Archives and Genealogical Society.

https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/ItemView.aspx?ImageFile=6-163&Event=marriage&ID=136261

This link will give you the 1918 marriage registrar of Otto and his first wife Martha Norris, then if you are still curious, it may give you the Death certificate information of Otto Leander Frizzell.

Artistry can be influenced by family members, friends, a book that you may have read or seen as a child at the local library, or at your school. It can also come from the heart in the form of a poem, a story, or just a written letter to a friend or family member that you haven’t written or talked to in years. This person is part of my immediate family, and I hope he has years of artistic development ahead of him because he sure has a few behind him, my brother John .

©ClenMoore Photography

Both brothers exhibiting their prowess at Fishing Lake Simcoe (late 50′s early 60′s)

It was at an early age that John had discovered ornithology, that is what is called the study of birds. Thanks to people like John James Audubon who over his career painted , cataloged and described the majority of birds in North America in a form far more superior that had gone on before him. It was his book that did influence my brother. The pictures that Audubon drew were exquisite for that time as seen below.

Great Auk as drawn by John James Audubon©.

Red birds drawn by Audubon©.

But this isn’t about Audubon, this is about the influence he had on a young boy who just had to get out to see the world that this man, Audubon got to see first hand draw. I was young when I had my first major run in with my brothers “art” and obsession of birds an things. I think it was around 1969 or earlier, and if I remember right as a 3 or 4 year old , I got into his collection of something to do with birds, nest I think, all I know is he was screaming, mom was screaming , I was screaming. Good thing Dad wasn’t home , he would have locked us all in the basement and taken the wife out to dinner or something. Yes ornithology, that’s were this is leading to . Next there is the picture, drawn at the tender age of 15, well if my big brother can have his drawn picture put in the photo album “WHY CAN’T I???” Apparently mom just could not reason with the reasoning power of a 4 year old, I over powered her over the next few hours and totally filled up the rest of the album.

©John Moore 1969 drawing of a heron

Top picture was drawn by brother John, like it said in the top paragraph around 1969, when he was 14 yrs old. Around this time he was hanging around another one of his friends that was also interested in the branch of Zoology that is the study of birds too. Between the two teenage friends they made a lasting friendship that stands to this day. Birds of a feather they say. Brother John completed his schooling at Barrie Central Collegiate around 1971/72, I’m not to sure of the year. After completing high school he struck out into the world and managed to get employment at the Canadian National Rail Road. This enabled John to travel around northern Ontario and look into the local and native birds of northern Ontario(Horne Payne and Capreol areas)

He still managed to get a few pictures drawn and he gave them away as either Christmas presents or birthday presents. The two following pictures below he gave to our father for Christmas of 1978 , meagerly wrapped in newspaper it didn’t matter to dad, he loved them all the same.

This first picture is of a Great Horned Owl.

Pen &pencil picture Great horned Owl ©John Moore 1978

The next picture is of red necked grebes.

Pen& pencil picture Red Necked Grebes ©John Moore 1978

We all go through certain stages as we grow and evolve into what we seek to become, I would imagine it is the same with artists as well. Those two pictures may have been the last Ink and pencils we seen, but the next couple of picture were consistent with trying out new techniques. Water colors, the first one is of a wood pecker in flight through some trees, the one after that is of a hummingbird sitting on a branch.

Watercolor Red headed wood pecker ©John Moore1982

The ruby throated humming bird may have been here earlier than I thought, below is a couple of pictures that were taken between 1970-1972 in our home one day. Mom grabbed the camera and snapped these two pics with John holding in his hand a humming bird.

John holding a humming bird.

Humming bird against white background.

Water Color, RubyThroated Humming bird ©John Moore 1984

John continued to do his drawings but they were few and far between, like was mentioned earlier, basically for family members only. He did start down another road of artistic talent though, that was wood carvings, he wanted to carve birds. All types of birds, shore birds, raptors, carrion eaters, yard birds,(not the group) water fowl, all types.

After retiring from the CN Railroad he went down to live around Perce Rock in Quebec and to hone his skill at wood carving and once again met up with his child hood friend John Wiseman, who by now was running an art studio and frame shop with his wife Lucy. John stayed the winter and managed to carve out somewhere in the neighborhood of ten wooden sculptures, and those were enough to pay some of the bills while down there.

He’s now back here, home and since returning he has done a more larger bird, a ravenUnfinished but noticeably making headway.

From a rough hewn piece of wood to a much more smoother textured piece of work, with eyes included.

The finish on the Raven is just as textured as it would be if you’d seen a live one on a fence post.

The amount of time put into this work/project was roughly 2-3 weeks, I’m not sure how many hours per day he put in, sometimes 2-3 hrs, sometime half hour here, another half hour there, nonetheless the final out come for such a large under taking is well deserved. Not only well done , while doing this large artistic endeavor, he was working on a smaller piece seen below.Much like his father, John Moore indeed has an artistic talent to keep an eye on.

A finch or warbler .
